about
Lyrically, 'I Don't Believe You' jumps between being conflicted and confident and I wanted to represent this with a similarly frantic instrumental. The bass clarinet actually came from an old un-released idea I worked on with my friends Laura Power and Zhuli, and the piano was from another random sketch. It was one of those collage-like songs, that all came together in 2020 after a random burst of inspiration. I was channeling Fleet Foxes, Coldplay, James Blake and Bon Iver when writing this one.
lyrics
Verse 1
Sun on your hand
In the late noon
Does it bring you joy?
I’m on the ridge
She said
Chorus 1
It’s not what you do
It’s if you believe it
And how hard is it to believe it?
Show me that you care
Verse 2
There’s a quarrel within my voice
Would you believe me if I stop
Stop talking shit
Does the space say more
Because I wanted to say more
But I can’t put it to words
Chorus 2
‘Cause it’s not what you do
It’s if you believe it
How hard is it to believe it?
Hook 1
I don’t believe you
There must be something wrong
I don’t believe you
You know know the view is stark
Beside you
Verse 3
Build the fire yourself for once
You shouldn’t have to try so hard
You believe in me too much
Straighten your back right now
Look over the ridge
Show me that you care
Or believe what you found
Hook 2
Why don’t you believe me
I don’t believe myself
You believe in me too much
‘Cause I don’t believe myself
Hook 3
You can believe me
‘Cause I believe myself
Could you believe me
‘Cause I believe myself
Outro
She said
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I do
If you believe it
I will too
Verse 4
Sun on your hand
In the late noon
I went back to the ridge and found
Two lakes, they lay apart
Will you doubt my love
If I doubt my own?
I don’t doubt my own
But it’s on the shore
